KU expands its maternity unit

altThe University of Kansas Hospital began a multi-year project to renovate and expand inpatient maternity and neonatal intensive care facilities in collaboration with the University of Kansas Maternal/Fetal Institute.

The effort supports the region’s most complete combined comprehensive care for both the mother and fetus. It is called the “whole couplet” approach, spearheaded by the KU Center for Advanced Fetal Care and the KU Center for High Risk Pregnancy.

 

St. Luke's South provides cord blood donation

Women who give birth at St. Luke’s South in Overland Park, Kan., can now donate blood from their umbilical cords for use in treatments for leukemia, sickle cell anemia, and dozens of other diseases and disorders.

The cord blood donation program is an expansion of the established center that opened at St. Luke’s Hospital of Kansas City in 2008. The collection program launched at St. Luke’s South on March 15.

 

Heart to Heart sends help to Chilean earthquake victims

Heart to Heart International, a humanitarian organization based in Olathe, has responded to the devastating 8.8 magnitude earthquake that hit Chile Feb. 27 and affected more than 2 million people, according to Chilean officials.

Gary Morsch, president and founder of Heart to Heart International, said, “We have initiated efforts to secure a firsthand assessment of the severity of the damage and establish protocol for delivering medical and humanitarian aid that may be needed in Chile and other locations as a result of the earthquake.”

 

Communities raise awareness

March 10 was National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day. Communities and organizations across the U.S. sponsored programs on and around this date to call attention to the ever-rising numbers of women diagnosed with HIV and seek solutions to reduce the spread of the virus.

Roderick Bremby, secretary of the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, encourages Kansans to take the opportunity to learn about how they can protect themselves from acquiring and spreading the virus.
