John Knox Village will host the The Ali Kemp Educational Self Defense for Women, also referred to as the T.A.K.E. Defense Training.

This is the second year that John Knox Village has hosted the event. The class is open to the public and will be occur from 4 to 6 p.m. on July 15 at The Pavilion at John Knox Village.

The first half of the class will teach women how to be aware of their surroundings so they are not left vulnerable to attacks. The second half of the class will teach them basic self-defense moves that can be customized to physical abilities. At the end of the class each person will have an opportunity to practice their new moves on a life-sized mannequin.

The Ali Kemp Educational foundation started the class to teach women how to defend themselves against possible attackers. The T.A.K.E. Defense Training program represents a living legacy in honor of Ali Kemp, a 19-year-old Leawood, Kan. resident who was murdered while working alone as a lifeguard at a neighborhood pool in Johnson County.

The class last year at John Knox Village drew in 140 female participants ranging in ages from 12 years old to almost 100 years old.

Community members can register for the class online at www.takedefense.org, or call (816) 347-2717 for more information. A $10 donation from each participant will go to The Ali Kemp Educational Foundation.
