altMissouri Health Care Association District I held the annual Ms. Missouri Nursing Home Pageant for local long-term care residents on July 6 at the First Baptist Church of Raytown.

Each nursing home within the district that chose to participate had a pageant of their own and sent the winners to the District I competition. Twelve contestants competed in the district level pageant.

Volunteers from Uvantra Pharmacy and Crossroads Hospice escorted the 12 contestants on stage. Master of Ceremonies, Jonathan Rhodes of Continua Hospice interviewed the contestants on stage. A small panel of judges consisting of Missouri Healthcare Association Director of Education and Events Jennifer Baker and State Representative Mike McGhee (R-Odessa) assessed the contestants by personality, physical appearance, participation at their respective facilities, life activities, and smile.

District I Vice President and Administrator at Deaconess Specialty Care Center, Carla Lungren, attended the pageant.

“This is my 29th pageant and every time I come here it reminds me of why I do my job,” Lungren said. “These ladies are an inspiration and make us want to be better people.”

Ms. Naomi Hawn, 91 of Garden City, Mo., won the District I Ms. Missouri Nursing Home Pageant Queen this year. District I covers Clay, Jackson, Cass, Bates, Lafayette, John, Henry, St. Clair, Saline, Pettis, Barton, and Hickory counties.

“This was so much fun,” Hawn said. “I didn’t think I was going to win, but everyone else knew I would.”

Hawn will compete in the statewide pageant on Aug. 25 in Branson, Mo.
