altSome nurses enter the field as a certified nurse assistant before they finish nursing school.

Bethanie Hill, CNA, chose that path and she said she feels grateful for the experience she has gained as a CNA.

Hill has been a CNA at Providence Medical Center for about a year.

“I have always wanted to be a nurse so I went and got my CNA,” she said. “I was doing a trial and error to see if that was what I really wanted to do.”

Hill works on a med/surg floor. She said she works with a variety of patients.

“Right now, I kind of enjoy the med/surg,” Hill said. “I’ve learned a lot up here.”

Hill has not started nursing school yet. She said the University of St. Mary School of Nursing remains at the top of her list. The University of St. Mary is a Sisters of Charity school. Providence Medical Center is a subsidiary of Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth Health Systems Inc.

Hill said her role as a CNA confirmed her desire to become a nurse.

“I love what I do,” she said.

Hill went to school for massage therapy before she became a CNA.

“I found out that’s kind of a hard thing to do when the economy’s not so great,” Hill said. “I got such a reward for helping people out with massage and this is another way to do that.”

The nurses on Hill’s floor support her ambitions to become a nurse.

“A lot of the girls have said that I’m going to have a lot more experience (as a nursing student),” Hill said.

For now, Hill said she enjoys her role as a CNA.

“When I go home at night I feel like I’ve done something good,” she said. “The reward from nursing is just amazing.”
