altOlathe Medical Center administrators selected a familiar face to become the next vice president of nursing services.

Elaine Patton, RN, BSN, MBA, former chief of nursing services, has worked at the medical center for almost 12 years. She became vice president of nursing services after Sherry Rakes, RN, MSN, decided to retire from the position.

“I’m very excited,” Patton said. “I’m stepping into a situation that is already superb. It has been so beautifully managed by Sherry Rakes over the past 25 years.”

Rakes, 65, contemplated her retirement for years before she stepped down.

“I’ve known that the time is coming for sometime,” Rakes said. “For several years I have prayed, ‘When the time comes let me know God.’”

Rakes said the decision to stay at Olathe Medical Center for 25 years came easily.

“I really felt like this was the place I felt at home,” she said.

Patton’s selection as the new vice president of nursing services makes Rakes’ transition to retirement easier, Rakes said.

“It’s very comforting to know that someone who has the same passion for nursing and knows the Olathe Health System will be following,” Rakes said.

At Olathe Medical Center, Patton has served as director of employee health and infection control, and in 3 North, 3 East PCU, Cardiac/Pulmonary Rehab, Education and 4 North/4 South.

“That has given me a broad base of the system,” Patton said.

Patton worked in finance before she became a nurse. She said her financial experience will help her in this new role.

“I’m really thrilled with this opportunity,” Patton said.
