Centerpoint nurses voted to decertify their union, Nurses United for Improved Patient Care, in a secret ballot April 23. The union was part of Nurses United Local 5126. Nurses voted 226 to 78 to decertify and 24 nurses did not cast a ballot. The National Labor Relations Board oversaw the election. Mary Nash, RN, president of the local Nurses United chapter, said Centerpoint nurses could vote to unionize again in the future. "I just feel bad for those nurses who worked so hard to get a union and to advocate for those things that they thought would better their working conditions," Nash said. "When that time comes if there is interest in forming a union we could go back and perhaps the next time we will win." In November 2007, nurses at Centerpoint voted 167 to 103 to join the union, with 66 nurses not casting ballots. After Centerpoint nurses formed a union, the union filed several charges against the hospital with the National Labor Relations Board. Centerpoint nurses filed a decertification petition Nov. 19, 2008. The nurses had to wait for the charges against Centerpoint to be settled before they could vote on the decertification. The National Labor Relations Board requires a 60-day waiting period after unfair labor practice issues are settled. Centerpoint administrators expressed support for the nurses' decision to decertify the union. "We are very pleased with the results of the election," said Carolyn Caldwell, Centerpoint chief executive officer. "Our nurses finally had their voice heard and they didn't need a third party stepping in between them and management."
