Shawnee Mission Medical Center increased its inpatient volumes by 6 percent in 2008, with 18,059 admissions. Outpatient admissions increased by 5 percent from the previous year, with 223,282. “This upward trend in patient visits illustrates our community’s trust in the high-quality and compassionate health care services our medical professionals provide on a daily basis,” said Samuel Turner Sr., Shawnee MissionMedical Center president and chief executive officer. Later this month, the medical center plans to open its Critical Care Expansion, which will add a new Emergency Department, Intensive Care Unit, Comprehensive Cardiac Care Unit and Surgical suites. “The Critical Care Services Expansion was constructed to meet community demand and provide additional services to our patients,” Turner said. “We’ve created a new Emergency Department that is triple the size of our current department, added 10 new intensive care beds and created a new acuity-adaptable unit to care for 32 cardiac patients at one time. Our 2008 volumes show this addition was necessary to ensure our community continues to receive the high-quality care they seek from Shawnee Mission Medical Center.” In 2008, Shawnee Mission Medical Center opened the Shawnee Mission Outpatient Pavilion in western LenexaJohnson County and eastern Douglas County. The medical center also purchased 42 acres of land in southern Johnson County for a future health care facility. to meet the needs of western “As our community grows, our goal is to continue providing services to meet the expanded health care needs of our patients, in convenient locations close to their homes,” Turner said.
